European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
