Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
