Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
